Camping 101

Camping is quite an interesting experience and is not for the faint hearted. You need to be prepared to step out of your comfort zone and enjoy a whole new different experience. 

It’s a timeless way to spend time with nature, family & friends. The beauty of camping is that it’s inexpensive, easily accessible, and it’ll definitely leave you with great memories.

Going for your first camping trip? Let’s talk about the basic camping essentials you may need.

On most trips, if you forget to pack something, you may easily be able to source it from nearby stores. On a camping trip, you’re likely to be rather off the beaten track, so you may not always have a store nearby.

You need to make sure to have a checklist for an enjoyable camping experience. (We’ve got you covered!)

The list below is a basic outline of things to carry, and you may not need it all – It all depends on the type of trip you’re going for. We’re basing this off camping trips done in Kenya…

Camp Essentials

To enjoy a comfortable stay, you would need the following basic camping essentials:

  • Tent
  • Sleeping Bags
  • Light air mattress
  • Travel Pillow
  • Flashlights / Head Lamps (Keep an extra pair of batteries)
  • Solar powered lights for your tent
  • Power banks
  • Portable fans incase the place isn’t very cool at night
  • Cooler box

Clothes

You want to keep your bag as light as possible, take the essentials only:

  • Cap to protect you from the sun
  • Waterproof bag just incase it rains or you’re out in the waters
  • Hiking Shoes / Trainers
  • Sunglasses
  • Long Pants / Jumpers incase the night gets cold
  • Slippers
  • Swimsuit

Food & Drinks

Carry some cooking essentials; cooking in the wild is always an experience in itself:

  • Utensils for cooking & eating
  • Water
  • Chopping Board
  • Pre-packed snacks and cooking ingredients
  • Matchbox to light the fire
  • Portable Stove / Gas Burner

Personal Items

  • Sunscreen
  • Lotions & Lip Balm
  • Hand Sanitiser
  • First Aid Kit
  • Toilet Paper
  • Medicine
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Shower Gel & Shampoo
  • Micro Fibre Towel (Quick Dry)
  • Reusable Water Bottle

Entertainment

Cos at times you may find yourself idle:

  • Camera
  • Binoculars
  • Playing Cards
  • Bluetooth Speaker
  • Carry a musical instrument if its something you enjoy while on a trip
  • Books or kindle

This post can be broken down further into quite some depth, but we wanted to keep it short and simple. You don’t really need a huge camping checklist (it all depends on the type of camping experience you want to go for – you may even go all out), but these basic items will do the trick 😉
